In July, our young mares Sónata frá Völlum and Vallarsól frá Völlum were presented to the judges at a breeding show in Hella, and we are incredibly proud of the high scores they received!

Sónata received First Prize with a total score of 8.11, an impressive result as she is 4-gaited and only 5 years old. Her score for ridden abilities is 8.13 with 9 for tölt, spirit and general impression, and she got 8.07 for conformation. The rider was Jakob Svavar Sigurðsson, who became world champion in Tölt T1 in the Netherlands a few weeks later. Sónata is a daughter of Hrannar frá Flugumýri, one of the highest judged stallions with total score of 8.85, her mother is Kátina frá Flugumýri.

Vallarsól, a very powerful 4 year old mare, also got an excellent score with 7.93 for ridden abilities with four gaits shown, and a total evaluation of 7.89. Perhaps not surprisingly, she received 9 for spirit. Vallarsól´s father is the famous Álfur frá Selfossi, her mother is Náttsól frá Fellsmúli.

It will be exciting to see how these two young mares develop in the future.

Ida Thorborg, who got her education at the University of Horse Equine Sciences in Hólar and is responsible for training all our young horses, did an excellent job preparing Sónata and Vallarsól for their first breeding show!

Both mares are owned by Hróðmar Bjarnason and Sigurjón Bjarnason.

This time of the year, the days no longer turn to nights and the twilight between sunset and sunrise is still bright enough to read a newspaper. Summer has come! For us, this means the beginning of the long-tour season. We venture further away from civilization and immerse ourselves and our horses in unspoiled nature and spectacular surroundings. The first three-day tours have gone out and come back and the first tour with free-running herd has left the farm to explore the beautiful Þórsmörk area. The weather is as capricious as to be expected in Iceland; wonderful, warm and sunny days alternate with rain, fog and brisk breezes. During the last week, the scenery in the lowlands has changed from barren and yellow to lush and green and the lupines have started to cover the country in their purple veil. We are excited about all the upcoming tours and adventures and are looking forward to introducing our guests to this country of dramatic opposites.

Eldhestar Local Staff Competition 2017

On  Friday, May 12, we held our fourth Eldhestar Local staff competition. 18 riders and horses participated in the competition this year. Most of the horses are owned by Eldhestar, some of which we actually bred ourselves, and the other horses are owned by their riders.

The task was to ride a full loop in slow tölt, then change direction and show a loop with speed changes along the short and long sides of the riding hall and finally a full loop in fast tölt. In the finals, this program had to be shown in both directions. Quite a challenging programme, in particular since the warm-up conditions were tricky this year due to strong winds, adding quite a bit of extra energy to the horses.

We had lots of fun competing with each other and showing off the training of the past months. After the competition our wonderful chefs spoiled us with a variety of lovely finger foods.

We congratulate the winner Ida Thorborg with our promising mare Sónata frá Völlum!

Cuteness Overload!

While the thermometer climbs to the high teens in the rest of the northern hemisphere and spring is either in full flush or at least right around the corner, here in Iceland, we have a little bit of winter left to go. But even up here we are getting ready to exchange our snow suits for a summary lopapeysa, the traditional Icelandic sweater.  Next to the return of the light and our official „First Day of Summer“, which we will celebrate on April 21st, there is one annual event that clearly marks the change of the seasons for us, namely when we bring in the yearlings.

Every year around this time, we separate the foals that were born last summer from their mothers and keep them in the stable for a few days. The moms are all expecting again and wouldn’t allow last years’ offspring to hang round much longer anyway. Once in the stable, the foals share a few boxes, so they are not alone, and we gently get them used to being handled by us. They learn to wear a halter and to be led as well as to be touched by people. We also care for their hoofs and look at their movements. It’s a pleasure to watch them change from frightened babies huddling together to curious young horses that demand cuddles and attention and discover something new every day.

They will stay with us for about 10 days before we reunite them with their moms. Breeding mares and yearlings will continue to be in the same herd for quite some time, but they will have detached from each other and while the mares are getting ready for their new foal, the yearlings will mainly stick together and do all kinds of mischief. It will be years before we take them in for serious training and for now they get to be wild horses and enjoy the summer.

Parental Pride

On a different note, we are extremely proud to announce that two of our older youngsters, the 4-year old Vallarsól and the 5-year old Sónata are showing outstanding promise and we are planning to present them to be judged this summer.

Our youngsters born in 2013 recently completed their basic training, a group of promising mares and geldings who are eager to learn.

They spent about 8 weeks at the farm and have now returned to our herd, happy to meet with their friends for another year of playing in the freedom of large meadows.  This allows our young horses to further develop both physically and mentally before their training continues.  It is amazing to see how much stronger and more mature they return!

Some of them will join our herd of tour horses, others will be sold.

Their  fathers are well known, highly judged first prize stallions:

Erpur frá Völlum – F: Korgur frá Ingólfshvoli (total score 8.41) / M: Fiðla frá Stóra-Vantsskarði

Moli frá Völlum – F: Kappi frá Kommu (total score 8,51) / M: Hiða frá Halakoti

Sinfónía frá Völlum – F: Seiður frá Flugumýri (total score 8,69) / M: Kátina frá Flugumýri

Vallarsól frá Völlum – F: Álfur frá Selfossi (total score 8,46) / M:  Náttsól frá Fellsmúla

Hvammur frá Völlum – F: Álfur frá Selfossi / M: Ópal frá Hvammi

Hremsa frá Völlum –  F: Glæsir frá Litlu-Sandvík (total score 8,11) / M: Bíra frá Svínafelli

Iðja frá Völlum – F: Þeyr frá Akranesi (total score 8,55) / M: Gleði frá Áslandi

Elmur frá Völlum – F: Korgur frá Ingólfshvoli (total score 8.41) / M: Elding frá Njálsgerði

As promised earlier this autumn, here are some pictures!

In the last century, the Agricultural School of Hvanneyri was the largest and most well-renowned agricultural school in Iceland. It attracted students from all over the country. For many students, the highlight of the year was the competition in breaking in and training young horses which took place in spring. This competition is called “Skeifukeppni”. The day of Skeifukeppni on which the various prizes are awarded is a true funfair for students of all levels.

The prizes include awards from the Trainers Association (FT) and the popular Morgunblaðsskeifan, the latter going to the student who receives the highest average score in the practical riding examination. The Morgunblaðsskeifan has been awarded annually since 1957 and it is considered a great honor to receive the “Shoe”. Some of its recipients later became known as the most talented riders of the country.

Award recipients at Hvanneyri's 60th anniversary

Winners from oldest to most recent

For the winners, this prize opened many doors in the field of professional horsemanship. They would be entrusted with the better horses and were given the task to train them. These where the horses the owners had great hopes for and that were expected to do well in future competitions.

This spring (21st April 2016), the school’s riding club „Grani“ turned 60 years old. In order to celebrate this anniversary, all previous winners, i.e. the winners of the past 59 years, were invited once more.

The picture shows the winners that attended the celebration, from oldest to the left to most recent on the right. If you look closely, you might be able to identify two of Eldhestar’s founders.  Hróðmar won the competition in 1979 and his brother Sigurjón won two years later in 1981.
