TOUR 3B - Soft River Banks

For experienced riders

On this tour experienced riders enjoy a brisk ride on an Icelandic horse in an extraordinary environment. We get to know the horses during a few rounds in the paddock and start the tour on nice trails along our vast meadows. We soon speed up and you get the opportunity to try the special, comfortable gait of the Icelandic horse, “tölt”. We continue riding through grassland, following the river Gljúfurá to scenic landscape at the delta of the mighty glacial river Ölfusá. We stop at an old cemetery with a great view of the river before continuing further down to the soft river banks, enjoying a short ride on black lava sand. This area is close to a bird sanctuary and known for many species of wetland- and sea birds. Weather permitting, we might even catch a glimpse of the famous volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. We proceed through the grassy plains before returning to our farm Vellir.

Mininum number of participants are 2 people. If we do not reach the minimum number of participants, a different tour will be offered instead.

I have been riding for 20 years, all breeds of horses. As a result, I chose the riding half day trip for experienced riders. After two and half hours riding in Iceland, I was debating bringing one of their horses home. The horse I rode was in wonderful shape, clean and well presented (a white horse after rain is not easy to accomplish), and happy to do his job. His gait was smooth, easy and comfortable, with a soft mouth and very responsive to body position, a true pleasure to ride. Saddles were well fitted and very comfortable. I am raving about the horses but the trip was wonderful too. We were blessed with a sunny and mild day. We rode along the river, stopping to take pictures and to hear information about the area. Lisa, our guide, was kind and informative. She had a lot of knowledge about the area and the animals we were riding. I only wish we had signed up for a longer ride!
